Western Digital My Book Live Duos Review: A personal cloud that’s easy to set up

At a time when we own multiple gadgets
laptops, smartphones and tablets it’s
become necessary to keep your data
in a way that is accessible seamlessly
across all devices. One option is to copy all music, pictures, videos in cloud services like Dropbox or Google Drive, paying a monthly subscription fee for the storage. The other option is to use Network Attached Storage (NAS), i.e. external hard disks that are attached to the wireless router at your
home. If you have an active internet connection and keep the router and
hard disk on, you will be able to access
data on the hard disk from anywhere.

All of this sounds terribly technical, and clearly the key thing to consider before buying an NAS is the ease of setup. I have been using the recently launched Western Digital My Book Live Duos, and it has been one of the easiest devices to set up.

The review unit came with two 2TB hard disks,
and came with just two cables - the power
cable and an ethernet cable to connect the
device to the router. I first installed the
software on the laptop, which is all you need to
do to set up the device. The software then
discovers the hard disk on the network. It
creates shortcuts to access the hard disk on
the desktop, and next launches the set-up
page.
You can operate the device in two modes. Raid
