BetaKit � Travel Health Apps Aim to Keep Travelers Healthy While Abroad

According to a recent study, roughly 60 percent of overseas travelers will develop a medical issue while away from home, and on average, the illness will cost the traveler $1,200 per trip. Not to mention some hospitals can make travelers sicker than they already are. Before smartphones, travelers carried guide books and perhaps a scribbled list of local numbers in their wallet. With travel apps available to help out with everything from restaurant recommendations to on-the-go information, travelers are increasingly able to download an
app to keep them safe and healthy during their time abroad.

Several apps are aimed at helping travelers
prepare before they leave, and stay educated
while they’re on the road. Pacific Blue Cross has developed a free iPhone and Android app that allows travelers to purchase travel health insurance from their mobile phone. Users can also view and change their plan on-the-go. The app also contains customer service support and a “First Aid Kit” with information on common illnesses people experience while traveling.

WakiApps’ Travel Health Guide app is
designed to help travelers look after their
health while they’re overseas. The app was
developed by Australian doctor Dr. Deborah
Mills as a way to compile the information from
her book Travelling Well, which offers medical
advice on how to stay healthy while traveling,
into an on-the-go format for travelers.
Features include a first aid guide, a symptom
searcher and information on common
traveler’s sicknesses, and the app can be
accessed offline so users can get advice on
health ailments no matter where they are.
