Flurry Analytics, a company that serves-
up usage information to mobile app developers, has published its latest findings on the portable gaming business. Until the recent rise of
Android and iOS, the mobile gaming space was
dominated by Nintendo and Sony. However, the
numbers released by Flurry Analytics suggests
that the duos market has been shrinking
significantly since 2009, while that of Android
and iOS games have been rising exponentially.
According to the report, the portable gaming
market share of Nintendo was 70%, Sony had
11% share with the PlayStation Portable, while
gaming on mobile was a modest 19% at the end
of that year. A year later, Android and iOS had
captured 34% of the market, Sony was left
with 9% share, while Nintendo maintained its
lead with 57% market share. The year 2011
(until December) turned out to be a game
changer as Android and iOS games took the lead
from Nintendo by capturing 58% of the market.
Sony with its PS Vita holds 6% of market
share, and Nintendo DS holds 36%.
