Health News : HELP/HOPE FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED / BLIND - Portable Reading Machine

Soon, portable eye to make reading smarter for visually-impaired -

The Central Scientific Instruments Organisation
(CSIO) is working on a project that promises to empower the visually
impaired and make them self-dependent.
CSIO is developing a portable reading machine that will act like an
artificial eye for the
visually impaired. The person can speed up the rate of speech, switch
to next document, set the voice level and have full control of the
device.

The machine will have artificial intelligence that will read out the
text. Talking about this device, Mamta Sharma,
technical assistant at CSIO said, "Unlike other
devices, which are too big to handle, this is a portable machine.
Earlier, these persons were dependent on Braille or third persons for
help, but now they can use this machine independently.

Our machine is made up of aspheric lens that is suitable for acquiring
digital images and speech synthesis in an embedded manner."Sharma has
been working on the project along with H N Bhargaw from Advanced
Materials and Process Research Institute, Bhopal, and H K Sardana from
CSIO.
The reading machine for the visually impaired would be made available
to the blind at
affordable prices. The device has been made cost effective so that the
Indian users can buy it easily. Trials have already been conducted on
the
students of the Institute for the Blind, Sector 26.

CSIO has been working on this special area for a long time and has
also developed many other devices, which would help the blind in
measurement techniques. Talking about some
future developments, Sharma said, "Our plan mainly is to modify the
prototype. We are also looking for sponsors from the industry. We want
the visually impaired to use this device because their feedback would
let us know what is
missing."
