The story of Sahibzadi
Zohra Segal is particular about her figure.
"Like a 16-year-old starlet," says her
daughter and biographer Kiran Segal. The
centenarian weighs herself every day. "And
at the slightest transgression, it'll be one
toast at lunch instead of two."
Kiran's series of vignettes of her mother,
the celebrated dancer and actor Zohra Segal, is
called 'Fatty', indicating the biography's
intimate register.
Commissioned by Niyogi Books to mark
Segal's 100th birthday on 27 April, the tone
of the book is exclamatory—and celebratory
—much like Sunday lunch-table anecdotes
about a naughty but gifted child.

It was only in the third phase of her 75-year-long career, after the
age of 80, that Zohra
became the silver-haired screen pixie that
most of us know her as, starring in films like
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Dil Se, and most
recently, Cheeni Kum and Sawariyaa in 2007. In Fatty, we get the long
