Future Displays To Be Made Of Air And Water?
Future Displays To Be Made Of Air And
Water?
Researchers have discovered a way by
which water and air could be used to
produce visual displays and also save
information.
It seems like digital displays will be made of nothing but air and water in the near future. Researchers at Aalto
University in Finland have come up with an
innovative way to write and display
information on surfaces using simply air and
water. That's not all. They've drawn inspiration
from the water-repelling flower--exploiting
the unique way a trapped layer of air behaves
on a lotus-inspired dual-structured water-
repelling surface immersed under water.
The group of researchers was led by Robin Ras
(from Aalto University in Finland) in conjunction
with the Nokia Research Center and University
of Cambridge.
The researchers immersed a dual-structured,
superhydrophobic surface under water. It
enabled a trapped air layer to cover the entire
surface. That surface featured structures in
two size scales: microposts that have a size of
10 micrometers and tiny nanofilaments that are
grown on the posts. On this two-layered
surface a layer of air is able to exist in two
different shapes that correspond to the two
size scales. The researchers found that one can
easily switch between dry and wet states
locally using a nozzle to create over- or
underpressure in the water, in order to change
the air layer to either state.
