Automobile /Money Tips : Concerned about fuel bill? Here’s how to minimise it
Concerned about fuel bill? Here’s how to
minimise it
It pains to see the wallet getting thinner every
time we fill fuel in the car, especially after the
steep increase in petrol prices recently. The
price hike has been a wake up call for many
people, making them think of ways to bring down
the fuel bills and save costs.
Buying a diesel variant of car instead of petrol is
certainly a cheaper option, considering that
diesel prices are at least Rs 30 per litre less
than petrol price. But, for those not planning to
trade their petrol cars for a diesel model
anytime now for environmental (diesel is
considered more polluting than petrol) or other
reasons, there are still options to check fuel
usage and save costs.
Installing a CNG kit: While some of the most
popular cars are available as CNG variants now,
your existing petrol or diesel car too, could be
converted into a compressed natural gas (CNG)
model by fitting a CNG kit. A government-
approved CNG kit costs anywhere between Rs
18,000 and Rs 50,000, plus a few thousands to get
the registration updated with the related
authorities.
Cars fitted with CNG kit can run both on petrol
and CNG. It is usually advised to start the car
and run for a short distance on petrol mode, and
then switch to CNG mode. Rajesh Gupta, a 35-
year-old accounts manager at an advertising
firm says, “ I recovered my investments on
the CNG kit in the first year itself. I pay just
about Rs 1.50 to 2 per km when I use the CNG
mode, compared with Rs 3.75 to Rs 4.50 per km
that I pay when using the petrol mode.”
However, only a few cities like Delhi, Mumbai,
Pune, Faridabad and few places in Gujarat have
CNG refill stations at present.
