HTML5 or native app? That is the question for app owners

Virgin Active's new HTML5 app. The club
says only a couple "general IT phobes"among 20,000 members intially struggled with the change.

In a time when apps seem to rule the world and businesses are measured by how well their customers engage with them via smartphone applications, should you build a one-size-fits- all HTML5 mobile web app or spend up big building 'native' apps for Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows Phone?

HTML5, the latest "write once, run anywhere"
incarnation of the web's mark-up language
HTML, promises the ability to build cheaper,
richer, more interactive apps that run on any
mobile browser.
The question is again on the lips of many
developers and their clients after Facebook
last month went the other way, and replaced
large chunks of the embedded HTML5
code in its iOS app with Objective-C, the iOS
native code. Anyone who recently updated their
Facebook app on an iPhone or iPad would likely
have noticed faster load times and smoother
scrolling.

via phone or on the web prior to attending
classes.
Around the same time, flexibility, cost and
pragmatism beat finesse when the Virgin
Active Australia chain of health clubs, scrapped
its free iPhone app in favour of an HTML5
mobile web app the company says was a no-
brainer. The "mylocker" app allows club
members to book classes and session times, in order to guarantee a spot.

Travel App Info : LA Taxis work with Autocab to create mobile phone app - Business News

BOOKING and tracking a cab is being made
easier at a Newcastle firm which has launched
its own mobile phone app.
LA Taxis worked with Autocab to create the
app, which can be used on iPhones, iPads,
Blackberrys and Android smart phones to order
and check on a taxi's progress.
LA Taxis’ business development manager
Steve McGuinness said: “There are other
taxi-related apps out there to help you find a
local taxi, but none which actually allow you to
book a journey from a specific company. A few
taps on your smartphone is all it takes to tell
our sophisticated e-booker system where you
are, where you want to go and at what time.
It’s a great way to avoid busy phone lines
and long taxi queues.”

The app contains millions of identity points in
its system, including street names, buildings
and places of interest, to allow people to book
a taxi even if they do not know their exact
location.

McGuinness believes the technology will be
especially useful in places such as theatres,
cinemas or hospitals, as well as for people
with hearing or speech difficulties.

Tech /Mobile Security Info : Smartphone users more likely to protect mobile privacy

In an age when sharing information is
effortless, people still want to keep personal
data private, according to a new report from
the Pew Research Center.

In examining how mobile phone users manage
their mobile data, Pew found that smartphone
users are more likely than those who deploy
feature phones to focus on data protection.

Those who carry a smartphone are more
than twice as likely as those with less feature-rich devices to back up their phone contents – photos, contacts, files – and clear browsing or search history once finished. Regular handset users are 23 per cent less likely to shut off location tracking than smartphone users.

"The wealth of intimate details stored on
smartphones makes them akin to the personal
diaries of the past – the information they
contain is hard to replace if lost, and
potentially embarrassing in the wrong hands,"
Pew research associate and report co-author Aaron Smith said in a statement.

App Info : Nokia Windows Phone 8 must sell the apps dream to developers

The key statement from Nokia's Windows Phone 8 launch in New York didn't come from the company's chief executive Stephen Elop, but from his guest, Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer.

He described Windows as "the largest single
opportunity available for software developers
today", touting the prospect of 400m devices
running Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 by this time next year.

But here's the statement: "The next app
developer to hit it really, really big will be a
developer on Windows."

In a nutshell, this is the dream that Microsoft
and Nokia must successfully pitch to
developers. It's not the only factor determining the prospects of both companies' smartphone ambitions, but it's one of the key pillars that will – to borrow the metaphor from Elop's famous memo – set their platform alight. In a positive or negative sense.
