IGNOU, Vigyan Prasar Launch Science@
Mobile
A joint initiative of the Indira Gandhi
National Open University (IGNOU) and
Vigyan Prasar, Science@Mobile targets
Science popularisations through mobile.
Science@Mobile is an initiative by IGNOU's National Centre for
Innovations in Distance Education (NCIDE) in
association with Vigyan Prasar. A free SMS
service for mobile users, Science@Mobile
offers science-related content and subject
matters on your handset.
Launched on 29 February 2012 as part of the
two-day National Science Day celebrations by
Amit Roy, director of the Inter-University
Accelerator Centre, the mobile application
Science@Mobile aims to provide comprehensive
information on subject matter such as Science
news, Science events, Science facts, Green
tips, Science quotes, About scientists, Science
humours and health tips to its subscribers free
of cost.
"I believe society without the appreciation and
knowledge of science is incomplete. If we do
not understand the power and application
behind a phenomenon, we would live in darkness
and consider it black magic. So the spread of
knowledge on science is very important," Roy
said.
"The number of mobile phones in the country
have touched almost a billion. The penetration
of mobiles has been immense, so the service
would be of great help to create the right
culture for science," he further added.
To avail Science@Mobile, you can register to
the service for free by messaging "SCIMBL" to
092230516161 or clicking the link provided at
Vigyan Prasar science portal. Although the
service is currently available in English only,
within a week SMSs in Hindi service will also
be offered to the mobile users, says The Hindu.
To mark the National Science Day, which is
celebrated on 28 February, Science@Mobile
service is aimed at providing interesting and
informative science SMS on your mobile phone.SOURCE -Science lessons now on mobile phones - The Hindu: Mobile Edition
